In a recent article, retired Israeli General Yitzhak Brik warned that Israel could face collapse within a year if the ongoing war of attrition with Hamas and Hezbollah continues.
Brik criticized the Israeli leadership's handling of the conflict, doubting claims of victory and warning of regional war risks if a hostage deal is not reached. He argued that the Israeli government's approach might escalate tensions, leading to a broader crisis. Mediation efforts for a cease-fire and prisoner swap have also stalled due to Israeli resistance.
Brik doubts that Israel will be able to force to Hamas surrender or to capture its leader Yahya Sinwar. He believes that “Most of the pretentious declarations made by Defense Minister Yoav Gallant throughout the war in Gaza have proven to be groundless,” adding that “With these pronouncements, Gallant, along with his colleagues IDF Chief of Staff Herzi Halevi and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, has been throwing dust in the eyes of the Israeli public”. Gallant, he believes has begun to realize that “the concept of total victory in Gaza is nonsense.”
Israel's offensive on the Gaza Strip following an attack by Hamas last Oct. 7 has continued unabashedly ignoring a UN Security Council resolution calling for an immediate cease-fire.
